Hello Blog. Today I will be displaying an up to date character outline, including why we chose the specific names we did as well as descriptions that are important to note. A complete story outline, as described here on this guiding blog post, typically includes a summary of the main events, the main characters and their motivations, the setting, and any other main ideas/ themes explored by our story. While I have included a lot of these aspects in separate blogs, I will be posting a complete story outline along with the script and storyboard next week, with Isabel and I just needing to combine all of our ideas and put them on paper.
Main Characters
- Doran- our PROTAGONIST. An 18-year-old male with brown hair, brown eyes, and a bronzed complexion. Doran was taught to speak English.
- History of the name: Doran is of Irish origin, meaning “stranger”, “exile”, “warrior”, and “wanderer”. In Hebrew Doran means “gift”.
- “Fearlessly pursuing new frontiers vs. simply existing on the outskirts.” “Unafraid to pave their own path.”
- Fidelia- One of the secondary main characters. Doran’s youngest sister- 14 years old. Fidelia was taught to speak Spanish.
- History of the name: Fidelia is of Latin origin, meaning “trapped by faith/loyalty”.
- Application: We want this to directly relate to loyalty to “oppressors”, or a battle between following what was taught to be “right” and an inner knowing that the societal implications are all wrong.
- Miriam- One of the secondary main characters. Doran’s closest sister in age- 17 years old. Miriam was taught to speak German. (due to her closer relationship to Doran who speaks English, which are 60% lexically similar).
- History of the name: Miriam in Hebrew means “rebel” and “rebellion”.
- Application: Since she was the closest (as close as she could be while being monitored by her mother) to Doran, she felt a vengeance and misunderstanding as to why he left/ never came back. She has always wanted to find him, lighting the first inside of her to take the initiative to do rebellious things. Overall, she’s the loud and proud, but also clever, protective older sister.
- Sage- One of the secondary main characters. She is one of Doran’s sisters and Salvia’s twin. 15 years old and was taught to speak Italian. (Easier to communicate with Salvia who speaks Portuguese.)
-History of name: Sage is of Latin root, and means “wise/ wisdom/knowing”.
- Salvia- One of the secondary main characters. She is one of Doran’s others and Sage’s twin. 15 years old and was taught to speak Portuguese. (Easier to communicate with Sage who speaks Italian.)
-History of name: Salvia is of Latin root, and means “whole/ healthy”. In the Bible, salvia means “a person who redeems/ saves others.”
- Beth- Mother of Doran and four girl siblings. She is the founder and top head of the secret yet fearful social experiment group that all of her children are a part of, as well as others.
- Adopting parents- The parents that find and illegally adopt Doran (when he runs away from an open door). They are Jewish and speak Hebrew, naming his “Doran”, in Hebrew meaning gift.
- They wanted to have a baby but don’t believe in the system (putting children to work/ using them for adult's benefit).
